Apparently some of them had found this web page, and were even taking it to heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not always quite as I&#8217;d intended. When I recorded principle #9, &#8220;Always go there&#8221;, for example, I had in mind that the accent was on &#8220;there&#8221;\u2014that is, it&#8217;s always a good idea to engage others on their turf, rather than on yours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I heard one of my senior directors quote the principle, which was kinda cool, but he put the accent on &#8220;always go&#8221;\u2014that is, he meant, we should never shy away from initiatives, new thinking, and change. His reading was in some ways even better than what I intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bPoint is, well, see #48&#8230;\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Selected Principles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practice must flow from principles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nothing important is objective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you can&#8217;t explain it to Josh, you don&#8217;t understand it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We got here from there for reasons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The other side has good reasons for its position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some battles aren&#8217;t worth winning&nbsp;<em>(P&nbsp;Ylvisaker).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware inferences based on residuals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earn more points than you spend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always go there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Silence has value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give bad news in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never surprise up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have to plug it in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dysfunctional technology is worse than no technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every so often you have to clean your desk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t work on the way home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Principles need not apply under $1,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Everything costs twice as much as you think.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If throwing money can solve a vexing problem, do that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red wine goes with everything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When there isn&#8217;t any red wine, white wine, if dry enough, is better than nothing&nbsp;<em>(R Schmitt)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good food is worth paying for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are only forty people in the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sports metaphors always mislead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unaffordable success is nothing of the sort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apology doesn&#8217;t require guilt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Link, don&#8217;t copy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Computers are never free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never attribute to malice what can be explained by&nbsp;incompetence<br><em>(via A Smith, from J Martin, writing as H Bauer,&nbsp;<\/em>To Rise Above Principle: The Memoirs of an Unreconstructed Dean<em>,&nbsp;University&nbsp;of&nbsp;Illinois Press, 1988<\/em>&#8211;but this is actually a paraphrasing of <a href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanlon%27s_razor\">Hanlon&#8217;s Razor<\/a>, typically rendered as &#8220;Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never quarrel with the parking god.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer the question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher education is fractal<em>&nbsp;(K&nbsp;Klingenstein).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free choice is antithetical to efficient support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u222bClue is a constant&nbsp;<em>(J Schiller).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Added value only earns points if it doesn&#8217;t add cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complexity is infectious&nbsp;<em>(K&nbsp;Klingenstein)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People think differently about Chevys and Jags.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never eat green Key-lime pie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bribery has its limits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it doesn&#8217;t scale, then success is failure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Confusion&#8221; may be just a myth, indistinguishable from advanced technology&nbsp;<em>(D Champion)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid restaurants whose name includes the word &#8220;Margarita&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a thing is not worth doing, then it&#8217;s not worth doing well&nbsp;<em>(H Bauer, op. cit.).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be careful.
